I don't know what it is about cake art but I love it. Maybe its because I have branded myself as a seriously inferior baker, that I love to draw cakes and look at pictures. I make a good pie and I punch out Henry's name on the upper crust for the vent holes. The only other sweet thing that I can make well is my gingerbread with dark chocolate pieces...other than that leave the savory to me. Henry's current favorite book is What Pete Ate from A-Z. We love love Maira Kalman in this house. I super loved her piece a couple months ago. How cute is this cake? Most people know that I love handlettering too... Henry also like this book when he was smaller. He's since moved on to more complicated books like Go Dog Go. I recently sent this book to a friend who is expecting. It's really nice and a good departure from often hideous low budget vector art found in most kids books these days. Wayne Thiebaud, I love how his paintings look really chewy and substantial...I'd be such a great art writer.... speaking of cakes and cute. check out the cover that the super cute and wicked talented julia rothman did for a new book coming out in august. you can preorder it on right here mmm. cake. i might try to bake one again later this week. practice makes perfect.

gray area

a lot of work ive been commissioned to do lately for others has been super saturated with colors, some serious toddler color palates. my own work? well lately its been more black, white and grays. im leaning towards purple and metallic gold for the incredible print show at artstream im part of in may but im not sure... ive been seriously in love with my pens and pencils again and just want to draw all day. speaking of which, i keep using my husbands pencils because i cant find the time to get new ones. i super dont like them. im curious about other peoples pencils. do people even use pencils anymore?

this sculpture by michele de broin in the middle of the woods is so subtle but equally intense. i can completely imagine it somewhere in the woods at my lakehouse upstate. my heart had been aching lately thinking about not being able to go there this summer.

my husband thor got me into jon klassen recently. i love his use of white.

klassen also worked on coraline with chris turnham and i super love his work as well. its a little charley harper-ish i think. im sort of partial to birds right now, not because its the name of my company because henry my son is like filled with overwhelming glee when he sees even a pigeon now. i think that he might actually have been a cat in his past life. he already sees imaginary cats everywhere.

from my old blog, but i wanted to keep it here too.

on sunday while eating at fiore, there was a party in the back. there were a lot of balloons. i asked the waiter if i could have a leftover balloon for henry, as he had never had a balloon before. he didnt get just one balloon, the waiter brought him two. i should insert here that i am really actually scared of balloons. but, for my sons sake i sat next to them. he was overjoyed with his balloons, im talking rubbing it all over his face, batting at them, yanking on the ribbon. after dinner (also now he is obsessed with dipping hunks of bread in olive oil and does so in his highchair), we walked outside. of course he wanted to walk with his balloon but hes got some balance issues still in the walking dept, "mama doesnt want you to lose your balloons". hes walking towards me, squealing happily about his balloons, pointing at them, making a super cute scene on the street. mama gets distracted and, loses the balloons. there might be something more heartbreaking but to see your baby boy crying "noooooooooooooooooooo! with his little chubby finger tracing the path of the runaway balloons...and being the one who let them go..terrible. it took a bit to make him less sad. but when we got home his face sort of showed signs of remembering losing the balloon and a little "noooo" came out of his mouth. yesterday, i promised that i would get him another one. i know hes totally probably not old enough to realize that he lost it and we can get another one. i wanted to keep my promise. so in the wind whipped snowstorm we hustled out to the flower shop and got him two. he was pretty happy. but now the cats like to hold the end of the ribbon in their mouths and tromp around the house.

in the middle of winter and spring

i like pretty. if i could wear ruffles, i would wear ruffles. i would wear ruffles and draw lace all day. thats all i would do. i just love the idea of handmade clothes. it reminds me of when i was talking to my friend mia from croatia.

noteworthy

a lot of people tell me that they keep my notes. i love notes. tucking them in lunch bags, suitcases and i like to leave notes on a hosts table (along with a nice loaf of fresh bread and maybe some jam) as a thank you for hospitality.

in other news i found this old sign im made with my friend ezra when we found a cat (and named him scrabble). sadly, scrabble went on to other places. i wonder if the new owners made a sign directed at ezra?

ive thought of using this bodalee bedding or some sort of wallpaper to remind henry that he came from the gritty streets of new york city when we are in friday harbor but ive also thought about using julia rothmans amazing wallpaper too.

i love it when kids have awesome style ideas. i cant wait to see what henry wants to do. if it were up to him right now he would have kitten wallpaper and his room would be filled with ducks and turtles.
